Today started out fun and exciting. The children learned about goalball for their blindness lesson. They had a blast learning the rules of the game. Goalball is a game which requires three people to defend one side of a court, while another team of three players defends the other. In order to score a goal, the ball must pass between the players of the opposite side of the court without being blocked. The ball must touch the outer line of the court to indicate that it is a goal. The students had fun listening for the ball in order to block it.

For today's blindness lesson, the children enjoyed an exciting play performed by all of the BELL players. The play was based on a little girl named Claire and her struggle to except her blindness. In the play, a super hero named Captain Whozit helped Claire realize that it is, "respectable to be blind." He also presented Claire with a white cane and taught her how to use it correctly, so that she wouldn't have to rely on her limited vision when traveling. The children seemed to really identify with this play, and they really enjoyed it.

Today was the first day of the McAllen BELL program. We had students ranging from ages three to thirteen years old. For our first blindness lesson, the children were measured and given white canes. They were taught how to use their canes before playing several games of red light green light under sleep shades. Each student was given a chance to lead a round of the game. For many students, this was their first time playing red light green light. This was a big hit.

The Rio Grande Valley chapter is hosting the BELL program in McAllen from June 24 through June 27, 2013.
